It’s 11 a.m. in the Ahmad house in Doha, Qatar, and everyone is still sleepy. It's one week after Eid, the holiday that marks the end of Ramadan, and the family is still nocturnal from trying to accommodate the rigorous fasting schedule that keeps them up at night.
I’m here to visit Hussein and Suaad, the parents of the Ahmad clan, who are originally from Raqqa, Syria. Since I met one of their sons in 2015, I’ve been tracking down every member of their nuclear family to piece together a portrait of what happens when an ordinary family is torn apart by war.
